The Vossloh G6 is a C diesel-hydraulic shunting locomotive, and the first locomotive of Vossloh's 5th generation programme. The G6 is the successor of the MaK/Vossloh G765, a 3rd generation MaK locomotive still offered in the 2000s.[1]
The prototype locomotive was shown on InnoTrans 2008. Verkehrsbetriebe Peine-Salzgitter was the launch customer and ordered 18 locomotives in April 2010.[6] The first locomotive for VPS was exhibited at InnoTrans 2010, along with the other new members of the 5th generation family.
BASF leased 3 locomotives from October 2010 onwards to serve its extensive rail sidings at its Ludwigshafen plant.[1]. In December 2011 BASF ordered 16 G6 locomotives to serve its 3 plants in Ludwigshafen, Schwarzheide and Antwerpen.[7] Once the dedicated locomotives are delivered, the leased locomotives will be returned to Vossloh.
In January 2011, the prototype locomotive was sold to Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz.[8][9] In February 2011, a second lease locomotive was sold to Zellstoff Stendal. It already was on hire by Zellstoff Stendal between August 2010 and February 2011.[8][10] In June 2011, VPS ordered an additional 22 G6 locomotives with an option of 5 locomotives.[11] VPS will thus have 40 G6 locomotives in service by 2016.[12]
